Oil + urethane finish. Year: 2009 Concept: The surface of a commonplace artifact--an old barn board, is exquisitely retreated. It’s an antique that’s been ‘tagged’ in a manner. The seat is a bisected pedestal, for a raised ‘tile plaque’ of sorts that lovingly frames the original and aged, rough milled board surface with its vintage sawmill marks. Year: 2009 Concept: Treated like an old garment that’s too precious to discard, obvious and artful patches accumulate and start to describe more and more of the material and structure, imbued with an authentic narrative of being timeworn and precious. A large salvaged roof truss board with mitered joints creates a minimal pedestal for the floating seat element. One of a kind sculpture with functional suggestion: This bench serves the easy transition for tossed off garments and items of the day to be picked up later, or a place to put on shoes or boots. Year: 2009 Concept: ARBOREAL LANTERNS: The units of these lanterns are floating boxes, cantilevered from a spine. The designs vary, but the luminosity is always achieved by aiming halogen spots in a telescopic fashion. The boxes channel empty space that seems to glow from within. The boxes are spaciously hollow with no fixture running through them; there are never more than 2 or 3 small bulbs affixed in the base or top box, even though the lanterns are often as high as 10 feet, creating many branches of light from a single trunk. The grain pattern of the wood boxes has a center axis. Similar to “book-matching” in cabinetry, the pattern extends symmetrically from the center point outward, like matching butterfly wings, but along a vertical column. The focus is on an organic form unique in each lantern. I feel as if I am reconstructing individual trees based on their remains. Dimensions and pattern will always vary. I am continuing to elaborate this basic form within the vast possibilities of wood types, and also with materials like patinated copper or art glass. Drawings exist for horizontal wall-mounted versions.
